The Three Most Important Plumbing Rules Every Homeowner Should Be Aware Of

If you own a home, there are three essential plumbing regulations you should be aware of. These regulations are in place to protect both you and your home from potential damage and harm.

The three main requirements are that plumbing systems, water fittings, and water-using appliances be installed and maintained in accordance with the regulations; that contamination of drinking water be avoided; and that plumbing installation work is scheduled ahead of time.

Regulation 1: Plumbing Systems

The Australian National Plumbing Code governs plumbing systems (NPC). The NPC establishes minimum standards for the design, construction, installation, and maintenance of plumbing systems. Regulation 1 of the NPC deals with plumbing systems and is divided into two parts:

Part 1: Design and Construction

This section of the regulation covers the design and construction of new plumbing systems, as well as the modification or extension of existing systems. It includes specifications for materials, fixtures and fittings, drainage, sewers, and water mains.

Part 2: Installation and Maintenance

This section of the regulation addresses the installation and maintenance of plumbing systems. It specifies requirements for hydrant testing, backflow prevention devices, cross-connection control devices, and private sewage disposal systems.

Regulation 2: Water Fittings

Water fittings are any pipes or fixtures that transport water to or from a water supply system. This includes faucets, toilets, showers, and baths. All water fittings must adhere to the Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS).

The goal of WRAS is to protect public health by preventing contamination of drinking water supplies and ensuring that water used for other purposes does not cause harm. WRAS also promotes water efficiency.

Before they can be installed, all new and replacement water fittings must be WRAS-approved. The WRAS website contains a list of approved products.

Water companies are responsible for maintaining the public water supply system and enforcing the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999. They can conduct unannounced inspections of properties to ensure compliance with regulations. If they discover any non-compliant fittings, they may issue a notice requiring the owner to take corrective action within 28 days.

Failure to comply with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 is a criminal offense punishable by a fine of up to £2,500.

Regulation 3: Water-Using Appliances

Dishwashers, washing machines, toilets, and showers are examples of water-using appliances. All of these appliances use water and must be properly installed and maintained in order to function properly.

Dishwashers: To prevent leaks, dishwashers must be properly installed. Check that the dishwasher is level and that the door seal is snug. Inspect the supply lines and hoses for any leaks or cracks.

Washing Machines: To prevent leaks, washing machines must be properly installed. The washer should be level, and the drain hose should not be kinked. Inspect the fill hoses for cracks or leaks.

Toilets: To prevent leaks, toilets must be properly installed. The toilet bowl should be level, and the wax ring should be intact. The bolts that hold the toilet to the floor should be tight. The supply line should not leak, and the shut-off valve should function properly.

Showers: In order to prevent leaks, showers must be properly installed. Check that the shower base is level and that the tiles are securely attached to the walls. Examine the showerhead, faucets, and valves for any leaks or drips.
